On the Visual Modeling Forum website, which kindly references this blog (thanks for that), there’s a page comparing General Purpose Languages to Domain Specific Languages. Unfortunately they didn’t get it right: the page references SysML as a Domain Specific Modeling Language. I’m a follower of the same school as Juha-Pekka Tolvanen and Steven Kelly, which states that a Domain Specific Modeling Language should address a domain that is specific to a single company’s (problem or solution) domain. Systems Engineering and Systems Modeling do not adhere to this, and SysML is thus a general purpose language in my book. I’ll try to get in touch with the people behind that site to have this issue addressed – more likely in the form of a discussion than a correction I’m afraid.
